Puppy nipping starts as early as 6 weeks old, this can be fun for the puppy but needs to be stopped quickly to avoid problems later on.

For young puppies nipping/biting is a natural phase to go through, especially when they are teething.

Puppies love to nibble on anything and everything during this teething stage, including ankles and feet of their owners. Sometimes it can feel like you've brought a snappy crocodile into your home rather than the cuddly puppy you thought.

The good news is that your puppy can be easily trained to stop this happening . The quicker you start to train your puppy the easier it will be for everyone.

Stopping your puppy from biting/nipping

There a lots of ways to help stop your puppy's biting problems. Before i start getting into the specifics of your dogs behavioral problems, always keep these dog training rules in mind.

Never hit your puppy in the face it does not work! Your puppy will just think you are being playful or could become scared of you. This may even lead to much bigger problems later on in life than simple puppy nipping.

The general rule to deter puppy biting is to always encourage good behavior and always discourage bad behavior.

When you are trying to stop your puppy from biting, never play pulling games such as tug of war, wrestling or games that requires then to chase you.

However you choose to teach your puppy the one main rule is be consistent. This means that you must stick to this punishment every time your puppy nips you.

You need to communicate to your puppy that the biting is bad behavior, he will not know he is doing wrong. Praise him every time he does something good this way he will know the difference from bad and good, you cant expect your puppy to know this!

There is another reason puppies can bite and this is that they are trying to assert their dominance. If you think that this what your puppy is trying to do, it must be stopped straight away. When you have a dominant animal its biting will only be the start of many behavioral problems.

The key to training your dog not to bite or nip is to praise them at every opportunity for good behavior and scold them for bad, they will soon learn the difference.

stopping puppies from biting

privacy policy
